Palma - Sa Calobra: The absolute route.

From Palma to Sa Calobra: A diversified route.

We would like to present you one of the most beautiful car routes on the island of Mallorca. Due to Mallorca’s geography (the longest distance between two places on the island is approx. 120 km) and the well-developed road network, it is easy to explore the island and go on excursions on your own. Reserve your Rent a Car on Mallorca at the best price with Hertz, Thrifty or Dollar.

There are different routes from Palma to Sa Calobra. We propose to you the road trip that we think is the most comfortable and interesting one. You can do the tour in one day (a day that will bring you many impressions), it has a total distance of around 70 km, part of it on the motorway.

From Palma, please take the MA-13.

After half an hour driving, your adventure starts.

Binissalem, cortesía especial para el enoturista.

Every wine lover visiting Mallorca should make a stop in Binissalem. Binissalem is a small inland village that, together with the neighbouring villages of Santa Eugenia and Santa María, builds on a long winemaking tradition.

The wine route includes at least a dozen wineries whose wines have their own designation of origin (D.O. Binissalem). You can taste, at pleasure, the main local varieties: Manto Negro, Callet and Moll.

If you are planning your Mallorca holiday for spring (in May), you might have the opportunity to visit the Wine Days Mallorca, a multi-day event with various wine tastings taking place and open doors of the wineries. In September, when the heat subsides a little, you might assist to the local grape harvest festival ("Festes des Vermar").

Inca, leather and fur.

Before entering the Tramuntana Mountains "Serra de Tramuntana", and still in the plains, you reach Inca, the third populous city of Mallorca.

You could take the opportunity and have a snack before ascending the Tramuntana, because Inca is famous for its local gastronomy. Taste typical specialties and home cooking in the so-called "cellars". Inca is quite popular - also outside the country - due to its textile industry, especially leather goods focusing mainly on leather footwear. The good quality of majorcan shoes is internationally known. A wide range of stores, shops and outlets awaits you in Inca, and makes it an ideal place for shopping new tendencies.  Well worth taking a walk.

Selva and Caimari, a mountain paradise.

A route through the Sierra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that extends from north to south in the west of the island, is a unique experience. That is why it deserves a post on our website. Most of the excursions on Mallorca include part of the mountain routes. In order to access Sa Calobra it is necessary to pass the Tramuntana. It is fun, you will see.

On your today's car route, you will pass two small mountain villages at the foot of the Sierra: Selva and Caimari. Normally, we would point out the sights of each place, though we will not do so here. The reason is not because there is nothing to see (it would be too extensive to write here about the traditional olive oil production, or the old charcoal stoves and the charcoal burners, or its neighbouring holm oak forests). In this case, the pleasure consists in sitting in one of the Café-Terraces on a square, contemplating the Sierra de Tramuntana, without hurrying. Just that.

The idyllic Santuari de Lluc

You should ideally plan our route schedule the way that you arrive at the Monastery “Santuari de Lluc” around noon. You then have already started the ascent into the mountains. The monastery is at an altitude of 500 meters. It is worth recharging your batteries here for the onward journey on the road to Sa Calobra.

The church of Lluc was built in the 17th century in honour of the Black Virgin "La Moreneta". The entire building complex has been comfortably equipped. Highly frequented by pilgrims and tourists, there have been created restaurants, a museum, a botanical garden with native flora and various leisure areas. Overnight stays are possible in the comfortable rooms offered by the monastery, or in tents on the designated areas.

The views from Lluc are spectacular. A postcard motif.

Sa Calobra and Torrent de Pareis, the reward you deserve.

To get to the destination of our itinerary, the Bay of Sa Calobra, you have to take the MA-2141. This serpentine road almost deserves its own chapter of a guidebook. It is a special experience, which anybody should have lived. Over 14 kilometres, the road snakes through the mountains (Sa Calobra, actually means "snake") and overcomes almost 700 meters in altitude. The road leads downhill to the Coll des Reis at sea level. There are sections of the route with a 7% gradient, in addition, the road is relatively narrow and runs the entire route between cliffs.

Well, even if this road has strong turns (you will get to a turn, the so-called "tie knot", where the road crosses under itself in a 270 degree turn), it still guides you through the most beautiful rocky landscape you can imagine. The surroundings consist of gorges, outcrops and mountain torrents and occasionally let the glittering Mediterranean Sea shimmer in the distance.

If there is not too much traffic, you can do these 14 kilometres in about half an hour, and then should reach your destination: Sa Calobra.

What to say about a place from where a single picture exceeds all expectations? At the end of the route, you will find yourselves in a small bay, surrounded by huge mountain ranges. The grey tones of the rocks, sprinkled occasionally with green vegetation, create a unique picture in front of the sea, in which the blue tones create their own play of colours of light blue, navy and turquoise.

Those who still have the capacity for amazement will find another natural wonder a few meters away: the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis, a torrent that does not always carry water; in good weather conditions you can walk within the first part of the creek bed without worries.

Both places are indescribable. It is a must-see. Not just seeing a photo, but also experiencing it yourself. The sunset, after all, is breath taking.

HAVE A NICE TRIP

We make it easy for you. And not only that. Truth be told, the first part of your route on Tenerife is going to be SO easy. And comfortable; without narrow serpentine roads (we will add some later on this route, so we won’t end up bored) It’s up to you whether you want to complete this beautiful route within one day or split it up in two days.

We would like to point out that it’s a challenging route if you drive it within one day.

Nevertheless, if you bring with you the energy and happiness for a longer excursion and if you arrive early in the morning on the island, you will enjoy this trip.

After arrival at Tenerife North Los Rodeos Airport, Rent a car on Tenerife with Hertz or Thrifty, if you haven’t already done so, and enjoy your vacation on the island from the first minute on.

The route has a total distance of approximately 170Km. One way. You then have several options for the return journey to the north of the island.

From the airport, we take the TF-24 road and start our tour.

Arrecife – Parque Nacional Timanfaya. Ruta sudoeste

From Arrecife to Timanfaya National Park. Southwest Route on Lanzarote

An island tour by car is great fun. Compared with the other islands of the Canary Archipelago Lanzarote is not too big and can easily be explored by car. The advantages are obvious: short distances and many possible stations to visit.

Today we would like to propose to you an easy and beautiful round trip by car. There are different points of departure. We can start from Arrecife or from Puerto del Carmen which has a wide range of hotel accommodations for travellers. Another option would be to start from the airport directly after your arrival at Lanzarote. The only requirement is to begin the excursion in the morning; without having to get up particularly early.

Assuming that you already got your Rent a Car in Lanzarte Airport with Hertz, Thrifty or with Dollar, we are glad to see that you are ready to explore and experience Lanzarote.

Our southwest route covers a distance of 80 km. The route is even shorter if you start from Puerto del Carmen or from the airport. However, we depart from Arrecife. From there we take the LZ-2 and then drive onto the LZ-501.

La Palma – Roque de los Muchachos.

La Palma - Roque de los Muchachos (and the sky)

When visiting La Palma, you will immediately notice that you are entering a green paradise. It does not matter which itinerary you choose, you will witness the incomparable lush vegetation that stands out across the island. Laurel forests overgrow the entire island wherever possible: on slopes, in valleys and gorges.

The forests of La Palma are awesome. You should not only admire them with your eyes, but also experience them olfactorily. Smell them!

Above the island opens up a sky, which, thanks to its clarity, creates optimal conditions for astronomical observation. It is not surprising that Roque de los Muchachos houses the best astrophysical observatory in the northern hemisphere.

La Isla Bonita, the beautiful island. This name is justified. Finally, the world biosphere reserve is located on La Palma.

If you are planning a car route on La Palma, you have several options. The road network is star shaped from the capital. Similar to the road network in Mallorca.

For our today’s route, we decided to propose you a north route, along the LP-1. Our way back to Santa Cruz de La Palma we will then take the northeast highway LP-4. In total, we will run around 150 kilometres. That is not a very long stretch. We do not want to highlight any village specially on this route, telling you that this one is more worth visiting than any other is. Each village has its own charm. It is up to you to decide where to stop, and which places attract you most. Nevertheless, as always, there are many sights on our route, which we will propose to you. There is a lot to discover on La Palma.

So take your Rent a Car La Palma Airport at the Hertz or Thrifty counter. When renting the vehicle, it is worth taking a moment to choose the rental car you feel most comfortable with. We will spend a few hours in it. Then we start our route, and drive on the LP-1.
